CHALLENGE 

Passo Sella is one of the most iconic and breathtaking mountain passes in the Dolomites of northern Italy. Known for its breathtaking landscapes and challenging cycling routes, it stands at an elevation of 2,228 meters and serves as a crucial link between the valleys of Val Gardena in the west and Val di Fassa in the east, forming part of the famous Sella Ronda loop—a circuit that includes three other mountain passes: Passo Gardena, Passo Campolongo, and Passo Pordoi.

From Val Gardena, the ascent to Passo Sella is approximately 10 kilometers long, featuring an average gradient of around 7.5%. This side is particularly popular for its manageable inclines that allow riders to take in the stunning surroundings. From Val di Fassa, the climb is slightly shorter at around 5.5 kilometers but steeper, with average gradients of around 7.8%, presenting a tough challenge especially towards the summit.

The road to Passo Sella is renowned for its dramatic natural beauty. It winds through the rugged and starkly beautiful Dolomite landscape, providing unparalleled views of sharp peaks and rocky outcrops. The area is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its unique geological importance and stunning vistas.

The area around Passo Sella is steeped in Ladin culture, with its own language, traditions, and cuisine. The Ladin heritage adds a unique cultural layer to the experience of visiting or cycling through the pass.

DISCOVERIES

Passo Sella is one of the most famous passes in the Italian Dolomites and is is overlooked by Torri del Sella and by the Mesules barrier of the Sella Mountain Group.

In 1872 the mountain pass road was built, three mountain huts followed which are still opened: at the top of the pass the Passo Sella Mountain Hut is located, which dates back to 1903, the Carlo Valentini Mountain hut, the oldest hut of the area (1884) and the Maria Flora Tavern (1934).
