CHALLENGE

Colle delle Finestre is a renowned mountain pass in the Italian Alps, celebrated for its challenging gradients and stunning natural beauty. The climb, known for transitioning from smooth tarmac to rugged gravel, begins in Menana di Susa. The ascent starts steeply but soon levels out to a more manageable gradient, with the initial tarmac section providing ample shade from the abundant tree cover—especially appreciated during the summer when temperatures can soar to 35 degrees Celsius.

A Historic Climb Featured in the Giro d’Italia

This iconic road has earned a special place in the cycling world, having been featured multiple times in the prestigious Giro d’Italia. Spanning 19 kilometers with 55 hairpin turns, Colle delle Finestre offers a challenging yet exhilarating ride. Originally constructed in the 1700s to access the historic Forte di Fenestrelle, this road combines historical significance with a formidable cycling challenge.

The Scenic Transition from Tarmac to Gravel

The first 11 kilometers of the climb wind through a picturesque forest on a well-paved tarmac road, offering cyclists a series of switchbacks that test their endurance and handling skills. As the tarmac ends, the road transforms into gravel, and the landscape opens up dramatically. Cyclists are treated to expansive, awe-inspiring views of the valley, making the gravel section a favorite among those who enjoy technical riding combined with breathtaking alpine vistas.

An Immersive Alpine Experience

Colle delle Finestre is more than just a test of physical endurance and cycling skill; it is an immersive journey through one of Italy’s most scenic and historically rich landscapes. The route offers a unique blend of natural beauty and challenging terrain, making it a must-visit for any avid cyclist looking to experience the grandeur of the Italian Alps.
