Breuil-Cervinia

2006 meters

Breuil-Cervinia from Chatillon in the Aosta Valley unfolds over a long and demanding climb to reach this celebrated alpine resort. The initial leg of the route from Chatillon is characterized by a lengthy stretch of main road, which, despite its lack of scenic allure, presents a degree of risk due to traffic. This segment do not offer the quiet or beauty of more secluded mountain climbs. Small towns, predominantly Valtournenche, adds a bit of spice, but otherwise only a short section near the top breaks the monotony with a series of engaging switchbacks that slice through the mountain landscape.

The climb to Breuil-Cervinia doesn’t conclude at a specific endpoint. Cyclists recognize they’ve reached the 2,000-meter elevation by encountering the roundabout just beyond the tunnel that marks the entrance to the town, but you get higher by continuing to the Plan Maison gondola lift.

Among the highlights of Breuil-Cervinia are the unparalleled views of the Matterhorn, an emblematic peak within the Alps. The mountain’s commanding silhouette provides a breathtaking backdrop to the ascent, offering panoramic views that captivate and inspire awe.

A detour to Parking Cheneil presents a quieter, more authentic alternative midway through the climb. This side route is an invitation to explore a more serene portion of the alpine environment, away from the busier main road. The journey to Parking Cheneil is marked by its tranquility and a deeper immersion in the natural surroundings.
