CHALLENGE 

The climb to Stausee Mattmark, situated at an elevation of 2,111 meters, offers a rewarding and scenic journey for experienced cyclists and col-hunters. Starting from the charming village of Saas-Grund in the picturesque Saas Valley, this route is known for its steady yet manageable ascent. Spanning 11 kilometers with an average gradient of 6%, the climb is accessible to cyclists with a good level of fitness, providing a pleasant challenge without being overly steep.

Saas-Grund serves as a tranquil starting point, offering a serene backdrop as you begin your journey. As the road ascends, it maintains a consistent gradient, allowing cyclists to settle into a comfortable rhythm. The tragedy highlighted a significant lapse in safety precautions, as the workers’ accommodation was built directly beneath the glacier tongue, a perilous location that ultimately proved disastrous.
