CHALLENGE

Silvretta-Bielerhöhe is a high mountain pass located in the central eastern Alps, straddling the border between the Austrian states of Vorarlberg and Tyrol. The most classic approach to Silvretta-Bielerhöhe is from the Montafon valley in Vorarlberg. This route covers approximately 22.3 kilometers, starting from Partenen, and features an average gradient of around 5.5%, but sections reach up to 11%. The road, known as the Silvretta Hochalpenstraße, is well-engineered with numerous switchbacks that gradually ascend the valley, providing a consistent and sustained climb.

The ascent provides breathtaking views of the Silvretta group, a range dominated by glaciated peaks and rugged terrain. As riders approach the pass, they encounter the stunning Silvretta reservoir, a turquoise lake that lies nestled among the peaks. The Bielerhöhe Pass hosts a restaurant and café that offer refreshments and meals, providing a perfect spot for cyclists to recharge. There are also several lookout points where cyclists and tourists can take in the views of the reservoir and the Piz Buin, the highest peak in the Silvretta range.

The Silvretta range has a rich history in alpine sports, and the pass itself has been a crucial route for travel and trade between Tyrol and Vorarlberg.
